State and Church
When the state actively supports religion, religion becomes a tool of the state, and the state soon becomes the only religion. The unholy alliance of sectarian and secular power helped prop up the Roman Empire for two hundred years, but effectively destroyed real Christianity within a generation.
Spirituality as a basis for faith dies when religion become the basis for social cohesion. A belief system that politically unites soon replaces personal piety with empty ritual.
