Milk and Metaphor

We are creatures of milk and metaphor
Sailors stranded on a distant shore
Miners of the heart's deep core.

We dwell in worlds both near and far
Searching the skies for some bright star
Never sure of where or who we are.

We sustain ourselves on warmth and wonder
Firesides and nights thick with thunder
Living lives of bluster and blunder.

We serve and suffer, we revel and romance
We guard our hearts and place faith in chance
Bowing to our partner in the great cosmic dance.

We are what we are and nothing more
The saint, the sinner, the poet, the whore
Creatures of milk and metaphor.

  1. This is probably the best poem I've written since the early 1990s.
